More Than a Move: Supporting a Family Through Transition

When people think about downsizing, they often picture packing boxes and moving furniture. In reality, it's so much more than that.

Downsizing is a process filled with decisions, and then decisions about those decisions. What stays? What goes? Who wants what? What should be sold, donated, recycled, shredded, or discarded? How do you make all of those choices while balancing emotions, family dynamics, and tight timelines?

This is exactly where Shape Space comes in.

We specialize in helping families navigate complicated, multi-layered transitions with compassion, organization, and practical problem-solving.

Recently, we were asked to help a gentleman living with Alzheimer's move from the home he'd lived in for decades into an assisted living community. His three adult children all lived out of state, so they coordinated one weekend to be together in Colorado to help their dad make decisions while also sorting through the belongings from their own childhood.

The goal was ambitious: empty a 3,500-square-foot home in one week so it could be sold as-is.

To make the process more manageable, our team got to work before the family even arrived. We pre-sorted the entire home by category, transforming the house into what we like to call a "shopping experience." Rather than searching through closets and drawers, the family could see similar items grouped together, making it much easier to compare, choose favorites, and confidently let go of the rest.

While sorting, we were also photographing and listing larger furniture pieces on Facebook Marketplace, coordinating pickups to happen while work continued throughout the house.

Throughout the weekend, we worked alongside the family, helping pack treasured keepsakes, separate donations, and organize what each person wanted to take home.

One of the most meaningful parts of this project was providing dedicated support to our client living with Alzheimer's. Decision-making can be exhausting for someone living with memory loss, and it can be equally exhausting for family members who find themselves repeating explanations over and over.

Each day, one of our team members stayed by his side, gently answering questions, helping him participate in decisions when possible, and offering reassurance throughout the process. This allowed his children to focus on making their own decisions, knowing their dad was receiving patient, compassionate support.

Once the family's decisions were made, our team shifted into execution mode.

Over the next several days, we:

  • Carefully packed and shipped keepsakes to the adult children across the country.

  • Packed, moved, unpacked, and organized our client's belongings in his new assisted living apartment.

  • Coordinated four days of free donation pickups.

  • Hauled 26 boxes of confidential paperwork to be shredded.

  • Managed the sale and pickup of dozens of furniture pieces.

  • Arranged a free furniture donation pickup for the remaining items.

  • Coordinated professional movers.

  • Oversaw junk removal for broken or unusable items.

  • Prepared the home for cleaners and the real estate photographer, finishing a full day ahead of schedule.

In just a matter of days, a lifetime of belongings was thoughtfully sorted, distributed, donated, sold, packed, moved, and removed.

Could this have been done without professional help? Eventually, yes.

But having an experienced team meant the family could focus on what mattered most: spending time together, supporting their dad, and making thoughtful decisions without becoming overwhelmed by the logistics.

While we're always ready to help families facing tight deadlines, we also encourage people to start earlier whenever possible. Downsizing doesn't have to happen in one week. Starting ahead of time gives you space to make decisions gradually, process the emotions that naturally come with letting go, and transition at a pace that feels right.

Whether you're planning months in advance or navigating an unexpected timeline, Shape Space is here to provide guidance, hands-on support, and practical solutions every step of the way.
