Donate, Sell, or Trash? How to Decide What to Do With Unwanted Items
One of the biggest questions people face during the decluttering process isn't always what to keep, it's often what to do with everything they are not keeping!
Should you sell it? Donate it? Give it away for free? Call a junk hauler?
The answer depends on several factors, including the item's value, condition, size, and how much time and energy you want to invest in finding it a new home.
If you're not sure where to start, use this simple guide:
Consider Selling If...
The item has moderate to high value.
It's in good condition and someone would realistically pay for it.
You have time to wait for the right buyer.
Shape Space Selling Services
Selling support may be a good fit if:
You have furniture or larger items that need to be removed as part of a decluttering, organizing, staging, or moving project.
Your items have moderate to high value and are too large, unique, or cumbersome to donate easily.
You would rather have buyers remove large items than pay for junk removal or hauling services.
You don't have enough items to warrant an estate sale.
At Shape Space, our primary services are organizing, decluttering, and move management. While we are not professional resellers, we have found that helping clients sell select items, especially furniture and larger household pieces, can provide peace of mind, reduce disposal costs, and put a little extra money back in their pocket. We carefully evaluate each situation before taking on a sale project. There are many factors to consider, and we're happy to share our detailed Selling Policies if you'd like to learn more.
Estate Sale
An estate sale may be the best option when:
You have a large volume of items (typically half a home or more).
There is a mix of small and large items.
Items range from low to high value.
You want a professional team to manage pricing, marketing, and buyer traffic.
Most estate sale companies offer free consultations, making them a great resource for obtaining a second opinion. Many companies offer both in-person and/or virtual sales and often have specialists who can evaluate collections, antiques, and unique items.
Consignment
Consignment may be worth considering when:
You have a small number of high-value pieces.
Items are high-end, designer, or premium brands.
Items are in excellent, like-new condition.
You don't have time to wait for the right in person or online buyer.
Many consignment businesses coordinate transportation and pickup services, which can be helpful for removing items quickly.
Garage Sale or Curbside Giveaway
This option may work well when:
You have lower-value items that are still usable.
You'd rather spend a Saturday hosting a sale than transporting items to donation centers.
You have large, desirable items that someone likely wants and can easily pick up.
Your neighborhood supports garage sales or curbside giveaways.
Sometimes the easiest solution is simply placing an item at the curb with a "Free" sign and letting a neighbor give it a second life. High traffic neighborhoods are better for this.
Consider Donating If...
The item is still useful and in good condition.
The value doesn't justify the time required to sell it.
You want the item out of your home quickly.
Supporting a charitable organization is important to you.
Self-Donation
A good option when:
You have mostly small items.
The items can fit in your vehicle.
You don't mind making a trip to a donation center.
Donation Pickup Services (Free)
These services may work well if:
Items require only one person to carry.
You can move items to a garage, driveway, or other pickup location.
You're able to prepare and organize items before pickup.
Most free pickup services require items to be easily accessible and ready to load.
Donation Pickup Services (Paid)
This option is ideal when:
You cannot move items yourself - items are large, heavy, or require multiple people to carry.
You have a high volume of donations.
You want everything removed quickly and efficiently.
Many donation-first hauling companies will pick items up from inside the home and work to place them with the most appropriate donation partners.
Specialty Donation Organizations
Many organizations accept specific categories of items, including:
Medical equipment
Children's gear and toys
Women's clothing
Home décor
Kitchen items
Building and renovation materials
We maintain a Specialty Donation Resource List and are happy to share it with clients who are looking for the best home for unique items. Reach out here.
Consider Trash or Junk Removal If...
Sometimes an item has simply reached the end of its useful life.
If an item is broken, unsafe, heavily damaged, contaminated, or unlikely to be accepted by a donation organization, disposal may be the most practical choice.
Regular Trash Service
A good option when:
Items fit in your regular trash container.
Your trash provider allows extra bags or bulk pickup.
You can move the items yourself.
Many trash providers offer large-item pickup for an additional fee. It's worth comparing that cost against professional junk hauling services.
Dumpster Rental
A dumpster may be appropriate when:
You have more waste than regular trash service can handle.
You can carry items to the container yourself.
You have time to load materials yourself.
Professional Junk Hauling
This may be the best solution when:
Items are no longer usable.
Donation organizations are unlikely to accept them.
The condition is too poor to sell or even give away.
Items are large, bulky, or difficult to remove safely.
Professional haulers can often remove everything in a single visit, making them especially helpful during moves, downsizing projects, and estate cleanouts.
The Bottom Line
The best solution isn't always the one that brings in the most money. Sometimes the right answer is the option that saves you the most time, effort, stress!
When clients work with Shape Space, we help them evaluate all of these options (and more) to create a realistic plan based on their goals, timeline, budget, and the items involved.
