Mission Accepted: Organizing a Colorado Family’s One-Car Garage

Every so often, we take on a project that’s as much a puzzle as it is a transformation. This one-car garage was exactly that — one of the most challenging spaces we’ve tackled, and one of the most satisfying to complete.

The Challenge

This garage needed to work hard. It had to serve a family of five — including three active teenage boys — and accommodate their very Colorado lifestyle. We’re talking mountain biking, rock climbing, boating, rafting, camping, backpacking (yes, different from camping!), skiing (both downhill and backcountry), water skiing, Ultimate frisbee, slacklining, and even rollerskating.

All that gear needed to live in one tight space — alongside yard tools, kitchen backstock, small power tools, home improvement items, sentimental storage and suitcases. And, of course, the ultimate goal: fit a mid-sized SUV inside.

Sorting, sorting, and more sorting.

The Process

We started by pulling everything out and sorting by category. This allowed the family to declutter what they no longer needed before we began the fun part — planning and measuring every inch for maximum efficiency.

Two new shelving systems were ordered, along with bins to categorize the family’s specialty sports and activity equipment. Camping and backpacking gear each got their own dedicated storage (because yes — they truly are different!).

Bike rack install.

The upper storage area was transformed into a space for long-term keepsakes and seasonal décor — everything labeled, sorted and accessible. Five swivel bike racks were installed to store bikes flat against the wall, leaving room for that precious car space. Additional ski racks ensured every pair of skis and poles had a home — with a few empty slots for future adventures.

The Details

A yard tool organizer was tucked into a front corner, perfectly positioned for grab-and-go access. Smaller bins were used to house bike repair kits, ski tools, and general household essentials like hammers and nails — keeping the workbench area open for projects.

Our client (the mom of this active crew) had a few special requests: she wanted easy access to her own suitcase, paddleboard and kitchen backstock. Mission accomplished.

The Product

Clear storage for easier categorizing on shelves, as well as binning and labeling.

The Finishing Touches

Beyond function, we always look for ways to preserve meaning. This garage held years of family memories — including a wall where the kids’ heights had been marked over time. We were able to leave that wall visible, keeping that sentimental piece of history intact.

We even found a new home for a small door from the original shelving — rehung near the bikes as a subtle nod to the family’s story and the home’s evolution.

In the end, everything had a place, the car fit comfortably inside, and the family gained a garage that finally worked as hard as they do.

A tight space, a lot of gear, and one happy family. Challenge accepted — mission accomplished.
